David Stearns.

It was reported Sunday afternoon by Bob Nightengale of USA Today that the New York Mets are expected to hire former Milwaukee Brewers general manager David Stearns this offseason. His contract expires after the season, and he is expected to be hired in Flushing to a high-ranking front office job.

Stearns stepped down from his general manager role with the Brewers after the 2022 season. However, his contract with the team spanned in the 2023 season as well.

Stearns was hired by Milwaukee on September 21 of 2015. Under his reign, the Brewers appeared in the playoffs four-straight seasons from 2018 through 2021. Some of his best moves were the acquisitions of starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, former MVP Christian Yelich, among others.

The 38-year-old Harvard alum coincidentally started his career in baseball in the baseball operations department with the New York Mets. He then moved on and joined the MLB’s central offices and had his hand in negotiating the Collective Bargaining Agreement back in 2008.

In December of 2011, he worked with the then Cleveland Indians focusing on player contracts and data analysis. His last stop before the Brewers was with the Houston Astros from 2013-15 as an assistant general manager where the team finally returned back to the playoffs.

The Nightengale articles reports that there are no plans to fire manager Buck Showalter or general manager Billy Eppler, “at least not during the season.” There is no mention of what may happen after the season when Stearns will reportedly be hired.
