In another sign that the Mets may be moving on from Pete Alonso, the team has discussed trading for Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, sources told Mets on SI.

The Mets and Alonso have failed to strike a deal, with owner Steve Cohen telling fans at Amazin’ Day, “I don’t like the negotiations. I don’t like what’s been presented to us.” Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent, responded to Cohen through The Athletic, calling his client’s asks “standard practice.”

Pat Ragazzo of Mets on SI reported last week that the Mets were considering a deal for Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkleson. Now, add Mountcastle to the mix.

Mountcastle, 27, hit .271/.308/.425 last season with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs in 507 plate appearances. He posted 2.6 bWAR, coincidentally the same as Alonso, though his value was derived more from defense. He was two Outs Above Average in 2024 and had eight defensive runs saved in 114 games at first base.

As for Alonso, he is reportedly garnering interest from the Blue Jays and Angels, but no deal is imminent.

If the Mets don’t sign Alonso or swing a trade for a first baseman, the plan would be to move Mark Vientos to first base and have Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio compete for the third base job. Jesse Winker, who has no major league experience at first base, said he would be comfortable playing there as well.
