According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are now “finalizing” terms with Max Scherze

Most New York Mets fans are bleary-eyed after a long night of refreshing Twitter to see if the club and Max Scherzer had officially finalized a deal yet, but news just dropped Monday morning to wake everyone up without any extra caffeine.
SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Scherzer’s camp and the Mets — likely general manager Billy Eppler — have re-engaged after Sunday night. It appears that negotiations are coming to a head and we’ll have some kind of resolution in the near future.
What exactly is taking so long, though? Especially after it was reported that the two sides were close to finalizing things on Sunday night? The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal reported that according to a rival executive, it wasn’t unusual because “all the Boras side items” takes time. That’s comforting, but it’d be nice to know some more details, which is where MMO’s Mike Mayer comes in to help us out:
Mets are discussing a potential 4-year deal with Scherzer. Opt-outs are also a part of the conversation. https://t.co/Dggr7ETnc8

Having an opt-out included in a contract for a Scott Boras client sounds standard these days. Plus, finalizing a deal that’s worth four years and reportedly more than $40 million per season takes a little time, I suppose.
As the thought of Scherzer actually coming to New York gets more real, it’s hard not to get excited about him teaming up with Jacob deGrom at the top of the Mets’ rotation:
Since 2016, Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom have combined for 8 (!) top-three finishes in NL Cy Young voting, and one of them has won it four times.
The thought of possibly having them both in the same rotation is just absurd. #Mets #LGM

This would indeed be absurd if Eppler and the Mets can get this deal across the finish line, as Scherzer would like to make a decision before the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on Wednesday.
If this does happen, New York won’t be getting a discount on this Cyber Monday, but they’ll certainly be making sure they get an incredible early holiday gift for Mets fans.
