Ken Davidoff of the New York Post is reporting that the Mets are interested in free agent designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. While that may shock some, it makes sense for the Mets to do so.

The Mets lineup is very left-handed, and they could use another right-handed bat in the lineup, especially against left handers. In 54 plate appearances against left-handers in 2020, Ozuna hit .356/.463/.867 with an OPS of 1.330. He also drove in 19 runs and had nine extra-base-hits (two doubles and seven of his 18 home runs).

Adding Ozuna could help out Pete Alonso by giving him some protection against lefties. Having them in the lineup together against lefties may force teams to play the pick-your-poison game.

The balance in the lineup would absolutely help the Mets when they’re not facing lefties too, Ozuna added 23 extra base hits against right-handers last season.

On the flip side, Ozuna is a corner outfielder, something the Mets are not short on currently.
