The Mets have designated Frankie Montas for assignment. This, first reported by National MLB Reporter Michael Marino and confirmed by our own Michael Mayer. Montas exercised his player option for 2026 earlier this offseason, but after undergoing Tommy John surgery, he won’t be healthy enough to pitch next season.

The Mets are making room on the 40-man roster for center field prospect Nick Morabito. The 22-year-old will be added on Tuesday to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft in December.

Montas signed with New York in December 2024, to a two-year $34 million deal. Montas started the 2025 season on the Injured List and never found his footing as a Met. He pitched to a 6.28 ERA in just nine games. Montas lost his spot in the rotation, and pitched his final game in August before getting hurt again.

Montas’s season had an ominous start during his rehab assignment. In six starts in the minors, he had an appalling 12.05 ERA. The Mets kept him in the minors as long as possible, and even contemplated not starting him in the rotation, but Montas made his debut as a starter in June against the Braves. He threw five scoreless innings, but the good outings were few and far between after that.

The Mets do have plenty of rotation options in-house with the offseason just having begun, but could shake things up further. ESPN’s Jeff Passan has reported that Kodai Senga is “extremely available” to be traded.

Whether the Mets look to free agency, the trade market or their young in-house options to fill out their Opening Day rotation still remains to be seen.
