According to Bob Klapisch of Bleacher Report, Mets’ team officials are considering voiding the contract of injured slugger Yoenis Cespedes.
Cespedes was on the 60-day injured list when it was announced on May 20 by GM Brodie Van Wagenen that Yoenis suffered multiple fractures in his right ankle. The incident happen at Cespedes’ ranch in Florida when the outfielder stepped in a hole. Cespedes underwent season-ending surgery in May and there’s no definitive timetable for his return.
The former All-Star was on the injured list following double heel surgery he underwent in the offseason.
Cespedes is making $29 million this season and is scheduled to make $29.5 million next year, the final season of his contract. The Mets did purchase insurance on the deal, the specifics are unknown with the coverage said to be a “little less than” the 75% on David Wright‘s deal.
Michael McCann, SI’s legal expert, recently went over the process the Mets would have to take to void the contract of Cespedes and the likelihood of them being successful.
Remember, the Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, was the one that negotiated the Cespedes deal with the Mets.
