Daniel Murphy is coming back to the Mets. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the retired fan favorite will pinch hit for Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling for at least two Grapefruit League games early in spring training.

Murphy debuted for the Mets in 2008 and played seven seasons with the club, mostly at second base. The Jacksonville, Fla. native was a 2014 All-Star selection when he hit .289/.332/.403 with nine homers, 37 doubles and 13 steals. He was the 2015 NLCS MVP when he hit four home runs in a four-game sweep of the Cubs. He left for Washington in free agency that winter.

Murphy won two Silver Slugger awards with the Nationals before finishing his career with the Cubs and Rockies. He retired in 2020 with a lifetime .296/.341/.455 slash line and 138 home runs. He tried a comeback last season that included a successful stint with the Long Island Ducks and a 40-game stint in the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Angels.

Murphy is not related to Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy, who called games from the Mets’ 1962 inception until 2003, but we hope he delivers lots of happy recaps.
