I don’t know about you, but this is starting to look like déjà vu all over again, folks.

Over the weekend, we learned the New York Mets might be shifting their search for a new President of Baseball Operations to instead begin looking for a new general manager. This came after New York seemingly either couldn’t chat with or find common ground with the top names on their wish list.

Earlier on Monday, we saw news officially drop that the Milwaukee Brewers denied the Mets access to even chat with David Stearns. Mere hours later, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweeted that Billy Beane was also taking his name out of consideration:

If you’re thinking the Beane news sounds like something you’ve already heard, it’s because MMO’s Mike Mayer said it was unlikely to happen recently:

Does this series of events sound familiar? It seems as if the Mets’ hunt for a new leader of baseball ops is going similar to last winter before Sandy Alderson committed to taking on that role.

It’d obviously be nice for the Mets to make a big splash in their front office search as they enter a crucial offseason with many important decisions on the horizon. However, bringing a big name to Queens doesn’t guarantee success will follow. New York needs to focus on making the right hires that’ll impact the short- and long-term outlook of the organization. After the last couple of years — including last winter with the hires of Jared Porter and Zack Scott — there needs to be a little extra attention paid to the vetting that happens during the interview process.
