The New York Mets announced that right-handed reliever Eric Hanhold has been optioned to minor league camp.
The 25-year-old reliever had appeared in seven Grapefruit League games, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings earning a 4.05 ERA. He struck out three batters, walked three, and allowed seven hits including a home run.
In 2018, Hanhold started in rookie ball and pitched his way up the ranks, recording innings in Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A, and the MLB. Overall, he recorded a 4.20 ERA in 49.1 innings, striking out 57. He missed nearly two months with an injury to his side, sitting out during June, all of July, and some of August.
Metsmerized Online ranks Hanhold as the Mets number 23 prospect for 2019, and you can read his full scouting report here.
With Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia, Justin Wilson, Seth Lugo, and Robert Gsellman all virtually guaranteed spots in the bullpen, the remaining two spots are up for grabs. Lefty Luis Avilan seems to have the sixth spot locked up, so if that is the case, six relievers remain to battle for one spot: RHP Tyler Bashlor, RHP Kyle Dowdy, LHP Ryan O’Rourke, RHP Tim Peterson, LHP Hector Santiago, and LHP Daniel Zamora.
