According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Mets and Red Sox have talked about closer Edwin Diaz. However, the two sides aren’t close to a deal.

Feinsand reports that the Red Sox will likely acquire one or two relievers, backing up Buster Onley’s earlier tweets that Boston is looking to bolster their bullpen. Onley speculated that Diaz could be an option as Boston.

Onley highlighted prospects Bobby Dalbec and Triston Casas as potential options for the Mets. Dalbec is batting .230/.371/.455 with 20 home runs in 101 Double-A Games, while Casas is hitting .252/.346/.486 with 17 home runs in 93 Single-A games.

After posting a 1.96 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with Seattle last season, Diaz hasn’t lived up to expectations in Queens. The 25-year-old closer holds a 4.95 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. But his 13.7 K/9, 3.83 FIP, and 3.24 xFIP suggest that he can still succeed in the closer’s role.

Diaz recorded a league-leading total of 57 saves last year and has secured 23 saves with the Mets.

Meanwhile, Mike Puma of the NY Post reports that the reason behind the Blue Jays’ clubhouse commotion yesterday was Marcus Stroman’s “initial disappointment” with the deal. Stroman expected to be traded to a contending team like the Yankees, Red Sox, or Astros.

However, Stroman appeared to have quickly gotten over his disappointment. A Long Island native, Stroman tweeted his excitement about being traded to New York:

“NEW YORK! Where I was born. Where my heart lies. Where my family resides. Crazy excited for this part of my journey. Some things were meant to be!”

After the unexpected trade for Stroman, it’s possible that the Mets’ next big trade involves Diaz. We will keep you updated as more rumors develop.
