The San Fransisco Giants traded third baseman Eduardo Nunez to the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night for minor league right-handers Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos.

Nunez, who has the fourth-best batting average since June 1st (.358), will presumably play third base for the Red Sox, though he is proficient at second base and shortstop as well. He has also played corner outfield, but during the course of his career, has a negative DRS at every position.

“He’s very talented, and that’s why a lot of clubs wanted him,” manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the trade. “He can run, he’s a good hitter, he can play anywhere. I’m going to miss him because this guy was exciting. He’s got a chance to get to the postseason, so I’m happy for him. He’ll help that ball club.”

Nunez went 9-for-16 (.563) in his final four games with the Giants and is now hitting .308/.334/.417 with four home runs, 31 RBIs, 21 doubles and 18 stolen bases. He has a 1.3 oWAR but a -1.0 dWAR in 76 games.

Cross one Asdrubal Cabrera suitor off the list. The Red Sox were the first team linked to Cabrera, but the Indians and Mariners are reportedly interested in his services as well. He has been playing third base to show his versatility, and considering his lack of experience at the hot corner, he has played rather well over there. I don’t think this Nunez trade compromises the Mets’ ability to trade Cabrera; Only makes the list of landing spots one name shorter.
