cespedes slam

It was a historic night for Yoenis Cespedes and the New York Mets as they defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 13-1 at Citi Field during Friday’s series opener.

Cespedes connected on his seventh home run of the season, a grand slam, in his second at-bat of the third inning as part of the franchise record breaking 12-run inning.

The grand slam was the third of Céspedes’ career and first since August 21, 2015 at Colorado off Jon Gray.

Cespedes also singled in two runs earlier in the inning in his first at-bat and had six total RBI in the frame.

With his grand slam, Céspedes now has an extra-base hit in nine consecutive games, which is a new franchise record. He passes Ty Wigginton’s eight-game streak from May 26-June 3, 2004.

The six RBI in an inning by Yoenis Céspedes are the most by a Mets player in team history, passing Butch Huskey’s five RBI in the sixth inning of the Mets’ game on May 26, 1998 at Florida against the Marlins.

Jake Peavy was knocked out after the first six batters reached base in a 45 minute bottom of the third. He was charged with six runs on four hits and five walks in two-plus innings.

Michael Conforto also continued his hot hitting, delivering an RBI double and an RBI single in the record-breaking third. Curtis Granderson and David Wright also reached base twice in the frame.

All in all, the Mets scored 12 runs in the third, had eight hits, four walks and sent 15 batters to the plate. The 12 runs are the most in franchise history, surpassing an 11-run inning from July 16, 2006 at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.
