Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Seattle Mariners have acquired outfielder Denard Span and closer Alex Colome from the Rays. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times further reports that the Mariners are giving up Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero in the deal.

Colome, 29, led the Major Leagues with 47 saves in 2017. So far this year, he is 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 2.69 FIP. In 23 appearances he has pitched 21.2 innings, striking out 23 and walking eight. He will likely set up for closer Edwin Diaz who has a 1.78 ERA and an MLB-leading 17 saves so far this season.

Span, 34, is slashing .238/.364/.385 with four home runs and 28 RBIs so far this season. He has played a good left field this season with 2 DRS but a -2.7 UZR.

The Mariners have been dealt some significant blows this season so far, with and injury to Dee Gordon and both an injury and 80-game suspension for Robinson Cano for his drug violation.

The Rays made waves right before the season began for trading talented hitter Corey Dickerson to the Pirates for practically nothing, and now are left with very little talent on the MLB roster. Starting pitcher Chris Archer and catcher Wilson Ramos are healthy and liable to be traded, while Kevin Kiermaier and Carlos Gomez await a return from the disabled list — And then they will probably be traded too.
