The New York Mets were unable to get the series sweep as the Washington Nationals pummeled them by a score of 23-5 on Sunday afternoon in DC.
Pitching
Noah Syndergaard was roughed up in the first inning, allowing five runs on five hits and walked two. He was then pulled in the second inning after reaching for his arm after throwing a pitch.
The Mets are calling it a “possible lat strain,” and Syndergaard has been sent back to New York for an MRI.
Sean Gilmartin was called on in relief and he got roughed up. He lasted 2.2 innings and allowed five runs as well on seven hits.
Fernando Salas struggled in his only inning of work as he allowed three runs on two hits and walked two.
Josh Smoker was roughed up as well as he allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits and a walk.
Third string catcher Kevin Plawecki was called into action on the mound. He allowed four runs in two innings of work.
Offense
Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to six game with a first inning triple.
Jay Bruce picked up three hits including a solo homer and an RBI single.
Michael Conforto stayed hot driving in his 13th run of the season with an RBI single.
Rene Rivera got the start behind the plate and picked up a pair of hits, including his first homer of the season.
Notes
The 23 runs allowed are the second-most in franchise history. The Phillies scored 26 on June 11, 1985.
Anthony Rendon drove in 10 runs and set a new Nationals single-game record. He was 6-for-6 with three home runs. He is just the 13th player in history with 10 RBIs in a single game.
Bryce Harper scored four runs which gives him 31 on the season and surpasses Larry Walker‘s 29-run MLB record for most runs in the month of April.
