The New York Mets (42-50) beat the St. Louis Cardinals (46-48) by a score of 7-3 on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
Pitching
Jacob deGrom (10-3, 3.48 ERA) took the mound for the Mets seeking his seventh win in seven starts and was able to accomplish that feat. Just like his last start when the Mets scored 14 runs, deGrom received plenty of run support as the Mets scored him seven runs. He did his part again as well as he went 6 2/3 innings, struck out three, and limited the Cardinals to seven hits, one run, and one walk.
Paul Sewald relieved deGrom in the seventh and got the final out of the inning. He stayed on for the eighth, but was taken out with two on and two out.
Jerry Blevins was called upon to get the final out of the eighth, but gave up two hits, one walk, and two inherited runs without recording an out.
Addison Reed was summoned on to get a four-out save. He got the final out of the eighth and was able to get his 16th save of the season with a scoreless inning in the ninth.
Offense
The Mets faced Mike Leake (6-7, 3.14 ERA) for the first time since 2014. They got to him quickly as they scored three runs off him in the first inning. Yoenis Cespedes hit a RBI single, Lucas Duda hit a RBI double, and Wilmer Flores hit a RBI single all with two outs in the first.
Jay Bruce continued the scoring in the second inning with a RBI single. Cespedes followed with a RBI double. Jose Reyes then drove in two on a line drive single to center. Leake was able to get out of the inning, but he was pulled out of the game after giving up seven runs in two innings.
Mets batters were held to three hits for the rest of the game, but by then the damage was done as the Cardinals could not overcome the seven runs scored in the first two innings.
On Deck
The Mets will look to split their four-game series with the Cardinals on Thursday afternoon when they send Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound to face Lance Lynn (8-6, 3.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 12:10 PM.
