The Mets (39-47) dropped the final game of its first half of the season 6-0 on Sunday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals (43-45).

Pitching:

Steven Matz was roughed up for the first time this season. Matz lasted only 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out one.

The damage against Matz came via the long ball as Tommy Pham and the red hot Paul DeJong each chipped in a homer to set the tone very early on.

This was the first time in 10 starts prior to Sunday that Matz didn’t last at least six innings. Today also ended his scoreless inning streak at 17 frames.

Erik Goeddel inherited two men on base, and allowed a run on a Yadier Molina RBI single before getting out of the inning. It was the first time this season that Goeddel allowed an inherited runner to score.

Seth Lugo pitched three innings in long relief and allowed one run on two hits while striking out three to spell the bullpen going into the break.

Offense:

The Mets offense was nonexistent Sunday afternoon as they were only able to manage three hits and were shutout for the third time this year.

Michael Conforto went 1-for-3 in his return from the disabled list.

Rene Rivera and Jay Bruce both also went 1-for-3 on the afternoon.

Yoenis Cespedes continued his struggles as he went 0-for-3 on the afternoon and just looks lost at the plate. Hopefully the All-Star break will give the slugger time to regroup and come back strong for the second half.
