Luis Rojas said during this afternoon’s press conference that Wilson Ramos will not be in the Mets’ lineup for game two of the Subway Series exhibition. Ramos is dealing with a personal matter.

Also from Rojas’ press conference – and likely of greater concern to the Mets – is that Robert Gsellman is experiencing tightness in his right triceps and that the reliever may not be available for Opening Day this Friday. Gsellman is “in a progression.”

The Mets are counting on their bullpen this season, with a rotation thinned by the losses of Noah Syndergaard to injury and Zack Wheeler to free agency.

The Mets added Dellin Betances for bullpen depth in 2020, and are hoping for better seasons from Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz. Seth Lugo and Justin Wilson join Gsellman for middle inning relief in the Mets’ bullpen. There has also been speculation that either Lugo or Gsellman could see some starting duties, should Rick Porcello or Michael Wacha struggle in this season’s short sprint.

Last year, Gsellman posted an ERA of 4.66 and a FIP of 4.12. Gsellman pitched 63.2 innings, all in relief, and struck out 60 while allowing 64 hits. He was slightly better in 2018, pitching 80 innings – once again all in relief – striking out 70 while allowing 76 hits. In 2018, Gsellman had an ERA of 4.28 and a FIP of 3.95.

With Brad Brach and newcomer Jared Hughes both on the IL, the Mets may need to find a way to replace Gsellman’s innings. David Peterson has impressed in Summer Camp thus far, though Peterson would have to make the jump from Double-A to the majors, and the adjustment from a starting to a relieving role.

MMO will update these developing situations as information becomes available.
