There was a flurry of moves this morning as AJ Ramos and Wilmer Flores have been placed on the disabled list with rotator cuff tendonitis and a tight lower back respectively. Taking their places on the 25-man roster are Phillip Evans and Hansel Robles.

In addition, Tomas Nido was sent down to Triple-A to make room for the return of Kevin Plawecki.

Ramos, 31, has been horrible so far this season as evidenced by his -0.5 bWAR. While he has appeared in more games (28) than any other pitcher in baseball, he has a 6.41 ERA, 5.14 FIP, and 1.627 WHIP across 19.2 innings. While he’d only allowed 17 hits in those 19.2 innings, he’s walked a whopping 15 and struck out 22. He is being paid $9.225 million this season.

Flores, 26, is having a down year offensively but had been heating up before his injury. On the season, he’s hitting .248/.320/.398 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 128 plate appearances. “Lower back tightness” doesn’t sound like the worst injury in the world (certainly not the worst back injury a Met infielder has sustained in recent years), so hopefully he does not miss too much time.

To fill the void left by Ramos and Flores, Hansel Robles and Phillip Evans will be taking their spots. Neither are exactly improvements.

Robles, 24, will be activated from the disabled list where he was due to a sprained right knee. Before his injury he had appeared in 10 MLB games, pitching to a 5.23 ERA, 7.37 FIP, and 1.548 WHIP with 15 strikeouts and three walks in 10.1 innings.

The utility man Evans, 25, had a great spring but has not been able to produce at the Major League level in 2018. In eight plate appearances he is slashing .125/.125/.125 with just one single and four strikeouts. In 39 minor league games, however, he is hitting .248/.319/.527 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs.

Kevin Plawecki makes his return from the disabled list as well after a brief rehab stint. After a very strong spring, the 27-year-old had been hitting .150/.393/.200 with no home runs and one RBI in seven regular season games before his injury. With Devin Mesoraco continuing to produce for the Mets, Plawecki will likely serve as a backup until his bat gets going again.

Last but not least, the 24-year-old backstop Tomas Nido has appeared in 21 games for the Mets this season. He’s hit .159/.208/.182 with no home runs and three RBIs.
