On July 13, 2016, Rafael Montero was demoted to AA Binghamton due to his struggles at AAA Las Vegas. Montero has pitched much better since being demoted, and this past week, Montero was named the Eastern League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 30, 2016.
Last week, Montero made two starts going 1-1 allowing just seven hits, two runs, two earned, and three walks with 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings. During his stint in AA, Montero has made four starts going 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA and a 1.094 WHIP.
This is actually Montero’s second Minor League Pitcher of the Week honor this season. Montero was the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 14, 2016.
