According to a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post, an industry source indicated that as it stands Mets’ team brass is “optimistic George Springer will be wearing a Mets uniform by the time spring training begins.”
The Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays have been the two teams most linked to the Connecticut native all offseason.
This report from Puma comes just two weeks after a source familiar with the Blue Jays’ thinking told MMO’s own Pat Ragazzo their front office is not overly optimistic that they will be able to sign Springer over the Mets.
The right-handed hitting outfielder and natural centerfielder is a perfect fit in Queens. Over his seven year big league career, Springer is a two-time Silver Slugger award winner and has finished in the top-15 in AL MVP voting three times.
In 51 games with the Astros last season, the righty hit .265/.359.540 with 14 home runs, 32 RBI’s, a 146 OPS+, and 1.4 wins above replacement.
