Mike Pelfrey had a poor outing today and the Mets managed hits, but couldn’t turn them into runs and they lost the series finale against the Tigers, 5-2.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey had a horrible outing today, allowing four runs on eight hits in four and two-third innings, striking out three but walking five. Pelfrey had poor control and paid for it in the third inning, which was essentially the inning he unraveled. An error by Angel Pagan fielding is the only thing preventing Pelf from having allowed that fifth run. As the trade deadline approaches, I wonder if Pelfrey gets traded? Impending raise, poor performance, possible wild-card contention? Swap headaches somewhere?

The bullpen was on point today, but sadly when it didn’t matter short of holding the game in reach of the offense. Byrdak, Carrasco, Acosta and K-Rod combined to throw three and one-third innings, striking out three while Byrdak being the only Met bullpen pitcher to allow a hit.

Pelfrey didn’t get the run support the other starters did, but not being able to prevent a large scale inning that he primarily caused is inexcusable.

The offense today got some hits, but the only ones that amounted to much were solo-shots from Daniel Murphy and Carlos Beltran. When the Mets win, they play small ball and today they go yard and can’t put much else.

Jose Reyes – 2 for 3, walk and caught stealing. A line-out double play ball killed a possible chance to draw blood in the first, but aggressive baseball does that.

Jason Pridie – 0 for4 with three strikeouts. Pridie has officially come back to earth and is not the next great Mets CF. Buffalo may not be a bad place for him soon.

Jason Bay – 2 for 4, no strikeouts. Always good to see Bay hitting. Contact leads to power, or so i hope.

Turning Point

When Pelfrey imploded in the third.

Game Ball

Daniel Murphy, 2 for 4 with a HR. Murphy has been heating up again, and once David Wright returns it’ll be fun to see who draws the bench seat between Duda, Tejada, Turner and Murphy. Full L/R Platoon?
