I really love your site! Can you answer me a question? When the offseason started Sandy Alderson said that we would probably acquire significant players mostly through trades rather than the free agent market. But then he signed Bartolo Colon and Curtis Granderson. Does that mean we shouldn’t expect any trades?

I believe Sandy said that because at the time we were seeing some exorbitant deals being dished out before the GM Meetings. It was probably a reaction to what some were calling “sticker shock.”
That said, don’t expect any trades this late in the game.
There might be a chance that the Mets still trade Ike Davis before the season starts, however, it won’t be for a “significant player or players.”
Teams are too unwilling to pay much for Ike coming off one of the worst seasons by any first baseman in 2013. And on the flip side, Sandy wasn’t willing to just give him away because of his power potential. So what you have is a true stalemate.
Even up to a month ago, Sandy told reporters that if he acquired a shortstop to replace Ruben Tejada this winter, it would almost certainly come about via a trade.
But as Anthony DiComo wrote after speaking to Sandy last week, “Now, even that possibility has evaporated.”
“I’d say that trade possibilities — just with the passage of time and knowing more about various situations — a trade is probably less likely now,” Alderson said.
So to answer your question, yes, you shouldn’t expect any trades.
