ian desmondAndy Martino of the Daily News reports that Washington’s Ian Desmond still remains a possibility, according to major-league sources.

“As of Thursday, no deal was imminent, and discussions between the Mets and Nationals had not gained momentum. But the Mets continued to monitor Desmond, amid expectations that they and the Nats would talk again.”

The Nats acquired shortstop Yunel Escobar from Oakland on Wednesday and general manager Mike Rizzo said Thursday that “Ian Desmond is our shortstop. He’s the leader of our team. He’s one of the best shortstops in all of baseball.”

However, some are calling that posturing and expect that Rizzo would continue to listen on Desmond.

“Cabrera’s resume includes a PED suspension, domestic violence charges that were later dropped and a DUI arrest. All of those factors gave the Mets pause earlier this offseason, but the front office is still not ruling out Cabrera.”

Martino concludes that taken together, this information paints a clear picture of a team not yet resigned to naming Wilmer Flores its starting shortstop.
