According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, a team official told him that while there have been no internal discussions about picking up the 2013 option on Terry Collins’ contract, that discussion could happen in the next three to four weeks.

A high-ranking Mets source said yesterday that there have been “no internal discussions” about picking up the Collins option, but predicted those discussions would happen in the next “three to four weeks,” and did not rule out the possibility of guaranteeing that third year shortly after the season ends.

The team is pleased with its first-year manager’s performance, Martin adds, especially considering most of the big-leaguers have been hurt or traded.

I wouldn’t have a problem with giving the Mets skipper some job security going into the 2012 season after the job he’s done this season with a the terrible hand he was dealt.

Collins signed a two-year contract with a team option for a third year last Winter, after a prolonged manager search by Sandy Alderson.

I don’t like the idea of having Terry Collins as a lame duck manager in 2012. In this town, and with the cuckoo birds on social media, it will only lead to a barrage of “Joke of the Day” blurbs on Collins after every loss or issue and honestly, he deserves a better fate than that.
