As if the Mets season couldn’t get any worse, there was some bad news last week. Juan Soto, who was one of the only bright spots this year, is sidelined again due to another calf injury. He was placed on the 10-day IL, and according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Soto will likely be out four to six weeks, longer than his previous calf injury. As far as the play of the Mets last week, they went 2-4. The end is near.

Offensive Player of the Week: Jared Young

Jared Young played some very good baseball last week. Young slashed .333/.333/.600 with an OPS of .933. In the 15 plate appearances he had, he hit one double, one home run, and drove in one. In one of the two Mets wins last week, Young helped the offense get started by homering in the second inning against the Brewers on July 21. It had an impressive exit velocity of 107.2 mph.

Pitcher of the Week: Zac Thornton

Zac Thornton was able to notch his first MLB win. Thornton was efficient during his start on July 21. He went six strong innings, only struck out two, and continued his scoreless streak to 18 innings. It’s the second-longest scoreless streak by a rookie southpaw, after Steven Matz in 2016 (19 innings), and the third-longest scoreless streak by a Met rookie since John Maine (26 innings). He also only allowed four baserunners all game, three by hit and one by walk.

Honorable Mention: Tyrone Taylor

Tyrone Taylor belted a go-ahead three-run home run in the game on July 26. Since coming back from the IL on June 26, Tyrone has been performing very well. He has hit .382/.462/.941 with an OPS of 1.403 since his return. That includes five home runs and nine RBIs over that span. Surely the Mets will look to capitalize on Taylor’s offensive outburst, the best of his career, as the trade deadline looms.

The Mets continue their home stretch, welcoming the Braves on Monday. Atlanta owns a 62-43 record on the year, good for first palce in the NL East. After the three-game series against them, the Mets take on another NL East foe in the Marlins for a four-game series. Miami enters Monday in the midst of a 12-game losing streak, after turning heads and looking like Wild Card contenders before the All-Star break. The Marlins are above the Mets in the East standings, holding a 52-54 record.
