The New York Mets played six games this week, with three of them coming against the division rival Marlins, and the other three against the Brewers.

Coming away with five wins out of those six games, the Mets were able to stay hot and on top of the NL East. In our debut Players of the Week feature, I chose Todd Frazier and Noah Syndergaard as the hitter and pitcher who were most impactful in making it happen.

Hitter of the Week – Todd Frazier

Up until this week in the young season, Todd Frazier wasn’t able to showcase the power we all are used to seeing from him. However, April 13 in a 6-5 win against the Brewers, he was able to hit two solo bombs over the wall.

This was the highlight of a great week for Frazier, who had seven hits in 17 at-bats. He also had four RBIs, while showing some great plate discipline in drawing seven walks. This solid production led Frazier to a .412 batting average, while also sporting a 1.384 OPS for the week.

Frazier was able to showcase his new found plate discipline last year, and has been able to transfer it over to Queens so far in this young season. He registered a walk in every game this week, except for the April 11 matchup against the Marlins. His ability to wait for his pitch, and get on base this season for the Mets has been huge for this ball club.

Frazier has been an obvious clubhouse presence throughout the season. If he can use his intimidating power to draw walks as he did this week, he can prove to be a player who changes this team from all angles. Not only is he my hitter of the week, but is probably one of the most impactful hitters/players overall for this ball club up to this point.

Not many players can have an impact on the clubhouse like Frazier does. Although it doesn’t show up in the box score, it sure counts for a lot of success this team has experienced so far.

Pitcher of the Week – Noah Syndergaard

We all know how impactful Noah Syndergaard is, especially when he has control over his stuff. This week, he was able to put on a show for the fans.

Although Syndergaard has had some trouble getting late into games, he continues to show his electric stuff, and repeated that pattern this week.

His line for the week:

1-0, 0.79 ERA, 11.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 16 K, .171 BA, 0.88 WHIP.

It’s always good to see Syndergaard limit his walks, especially after seeing his outs come from swing and misses. His most impressive outing came yesterday against the Brewers where he pitched 5.1 innings, striking out 11 batters, while allowing no runs on two hits.

It really seems that the trouble Syndergaard has gotten into this year as of now is just unlucky. He runs into that one bad inning, where he either walks somebody or allows a hit at the wrong time.

As the season progresses, Syndergaard will get into his groove and we will see him pitch more into the sixth and seven innings, which hasn’t happened  so far this year. His stuff seems to be as good as ever, and soon enough the luck will bounce his way.

His double-digit strikeout performance on Sunday is surely something he should be proud of. He pitched a very solid game, and his stuff was electric. Holding his opponents to just a .171 batting average this week, he was able to minimize any threat the opposition brought, giving his team the best chance to win.

Im sure we’ll see his name again as the Pitcher of the Week in future features, especially because he hasn’t even been pitching the best baseball we’ve usually seen from him.

Wrap Up

Both Frazier and Syndergaard have had a huge impact on this team not only during this week, but for the season as a whole. Frazier being the classy veteran who is a leader in the clubhouse and a producer on the field, while Syndergaard is the young electric stud the Mets see as the long term ace of their pitching staff.

These two players with completely different roles and styles have helped this team continue winning, and are key pieces to its future success as well.
