Week after week, these Player of the Week stories seem to have a common theme: the New York Mets keep on winning, and each new week, there is a new star that led the team to a string of victories.

Last week, the Mets picked up a handful of victories at Citi Field, sweeping the Reds and taking two of three from the Phillies. Heading into the new week, the division lead sits at 5 1/2 games, a comfortable-ish lead before the team travels to Atlanta for another major series against the Braves.

In the 5-1 stretch last week, the Mets were backed by impressive days at the plate from both their designated hitters, as well as two excellent starts from one of their 2022 offseason pitching acquisitions.

Hitter(s) of the Week

For the first half of the season, the Mets failed time and time again with getting consistent results from their designated hitter spot. Whether it was J.D. Davis or Dominic Smith, the Mets were getting some of their worst offensive production from a position that should be among the best at the plate. Following the trade deadline, the Mets have finally found what works at DH, and it’s in the two-headed monster of Daniel Vogelbach and Darin Ruf. Both men pick up player of the week honors for their fantastic play last week. Vogelbach recorded an OPS of .882 with two doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in. Ruf, in his seven plate appearances, got on base at a .429 clip, slugged .714, and hit two doubles to go along with two RBIs. Credit goes here to the Mets coaching staff as well, who’ve expertly utilized this designated hitter platoon system to bring the best out of both Vogey and Ruf.

Pitcher of the Week

Chris Bassitt, the only starter to pitch multiple times for the Mets last week, earns player of the week honors after pitching 13 innings with a 0.00 ERA. He allowed just one unearned run and walked three batters, but struck out thirteen men as well in a dazzling week. On Monday against the Reds, Bassitt saw eight hits scattered off him, but willed his way through eight dominant frames, throwing a season high 114 pitches. He continued his stellar pitching against the Phillies, shutting out the Phils’ across five innings, striking out five Philadelphia batters. Through August thus far, Bassitt has yet to allow an earned run in three starts.
