This week was a mixed bag for the Mets as they got swept by the Milwaukee Brewers before taking two of three from the Miami Marlins in their first home series of the 2023 season. Along the way, Pete Alonso and Tylor Megill stood out with outstanding performances at opportune times that helped the team recapture momentum.

Hitter of the Week

This one is a no-brainer.

Pete Alonso started off the year relatively slow, but he turned the jets on with a monster showing in the final game of the series on Wednesday against Corbin Burnes. Alonso hit a pair of two-run homers off of Burnes, with the first tying the game at 4-4 in the third inning and the second giving the Mets a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning.

In the home opener on Friday against Miami, Alonso went 2-for-5 with a homer off Daniel Castano before mashing another the next day off Trevor Rogers to make it three games in a row with a long ball.

Alonso is currently tied with Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds for the MLB home run lead with five.

In total, Alonso slashed .250/.280/.750 with four home runs and nine RBI on the week.

Pitcher of the Week

Tylor Megill made his second start of the season against the Marlins on Friday and continued to impress in place of Justin Verlander.

Megill, who gave up two runs over five innings in his first outing, took it up a notch this time around. He pitched six innings and gave up no runs while striking out three and walking just two on the way to a 9-3 Mets victory. He also finished the game with a 3.34 FIP and tallied his second win of the season.

Megill’s success thus far has been predicated upon limiting hard contact and inducing ground balls, both of which being aspects of the game that he has struggled with in the past. With a majority of the Mets’ starters scuffling early in the season, it’s easy to envision a world in which Megill remains in the rotation for the long-term.

Kodai Senga is also deserving of the award after another stellar start to open his MLB career, but Megill’s shutout performance and its importance in getting the Mets back on track ultimately earns him the nod.
