Savannah 8, Greensboro 1

A six-run third inning put Savannah on the fast track to a dominating victory over Greensboro on Wednesday night.

Matthew Bowman got the nod for Savannah and looked strong yet again for the Sand Gnats, as he pitched into the sixth inning and played a big part in what turned out to be a dominant pitching night for Savannah. Although they made three errors behind him, he barely looked phased on the mound and allowed only four hits and a walk of his own, while striking out five. His only real blemish was a two-out RBI double in the third inning, but it was smooth sailing for him overall.

The rest of the Savannah pitching staff was on cruise control for the night as well, as Beck Wheeler pitched two-and-two-thirds innings without allowing a single baserunner and striking out four. Tim Peterson came on and struck out one in a perfect inning to finish the game.

As for the offense, the Sand Gnats scored eight runs without the benefit of a home run – although Eudy Pina and Gregory Pron did drive in three runs each. Pron drilled a two-out double that cleared the bases in the third inning – while Pina ripped a double of his own in the eighth to drive home two. By the way, Brandon Nimmo kept the good vibes rolling with two more hits, which actually lowered his average to .442.
