The Mets lost a tough one to the Phillies on Saturday, falling by a score of 6-2, giving them their 13th loss on the season. (box score)

Not much went their way in this game, as starter Steven Matz continued to struggle on the mound and the offense was nearly nonexistent.

Pitching

Steven Matz was the starter in this one. He got off to a nice start, only allowing one run through the first four innings thanks to a solo home run by Jean Segura.

In the fifth, however, everything went downhill for Matz. After allowing two singles and a walk to load the bases, Matz would give up the second Phillies run via a walk to Andrew McCutchen. Rhys Hoskins followed with a bases clearing double to give the Phillies a 5-0 lead. The damage wasn’t done there, as Bryce Harper brought in a sixth run with a double of his own.

Jeurys Familia replaced Matz in the fifth, getting the final two outs of the inning as well as pitching the sixth. In total, he allowed just one hit in an inning and two thirds.

Brad Brach pitched the Mets’ seventh, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The last Mets pitcher to get the ball in the game was Dellin BetancesHe gave up just one hit in the eighth inning.

Outside of Matz, the Mets pitching had a nice day, as the bullpen combined for three and two third innings of scoreless baseball.

After the game, Matz told reporters, “It’s really frustrating…I gotta give the team a better chance to win. It’s unacceptable.” Indeed.

Offense

The Mets’ offense was very quiet today outside of the ninth inning, when Dom Smith hit a two run home run.

Overall, the Mets collected six hits in the contest, a third of them coming from Smith himself.

The Mets were 0-3 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Overall a very quiet night for the Mets’ bats.
