Earlier today, the Philadelphia Phillies designated outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment in order to make room on the active roster for Cody Asche, who has spent the last several weeks at Triple-A transitioning from third base to outfield.
Sizemore, 32, is only hitting .245/.288/.296 in 39 games for the Phillies this season, but can be valuable to a team as a fourth outfielder or a pinch hitter. Considering how thin the Mets bench is and how mightily they have collectively struggled, Sizemore is worth a look at.
In his heyday, Sizemore was a three-time all-star, and one of the elite players in the game for the Cleveland Indians, but missed significant time in recent years due to frequent injuries.
I think that Sizemore could definitely help the Mets off the bench, but in no means should he be an everyday player. However, he provides a better alternative pinch hitting late in games than light hitting Darrell Ceciliani or Daniel Muno.
The Mets have a glaring need to improve their bench, so it’s worth taking a flyer on Sizemore.
The Phillies will have ten days to waive him, trade him, release him, or outright him.
