The Mets relayed a ton of injury news on Tuesday afternoon, including upcoming injury imaging, rehab assignments, and impending returns.

Carrasco to Start Friday, Other Pitching Reinforcements on the Way

Beginning with the rotation, Carlos Carrasco is expected to start for the Mets on Friday in his return for the Mets. Carrasco struggled in his first three starts with the Mets before hitting the injured list, but his seven innings of one-run baseball in two rehab starts in Binghamton show that he might be healed from what was ailing him. Carrasco will make his first start for the major league team since hitting the IL on April 18.

Left-handed starter José Quintana has been out all season following rib surgery, but manager Buck Schowalter said that the veteran starter has a “big” CT scan on Friday, and that if all goes well, he could begin to ramp up baseball activities soon. Quintana signed a two-year deal with the Mets last off-season but is yet to make his major league debut with the team.

David Peterson was optioned to Triple-A, and lefty reliever Josh Walker was called up to reinforce the bullpen. Walker will make his MLB debut when he appears in a game.

As for righty reliever Jimmy Yacabonis, he is slated to begin a rehab assignment tonight with Double-A Binghamton, per the Mets’ official transaction log. He was placed on the injured list on May 9th with a left quad strain designation. Yacabonis has completed 9 innings this year for the Mets, and posted a 9.00 ERA.

Narváez to Start Rehab Assignment

Catcher Omar Narváez could begin a rehab assignment as soon as the end of next week, as well, according to Buck Schowalter. The catcher made his Mets debut by making the Opening Day roster but has been sidelined since early April with a medium-to-high calf injury.

In his absence, Francisco Álvarez has settled in nicely to be the Mets’ starting catcher. Additionally, catcher Tomas Nido has been on the injured list with dry eye syndrome, catcher Michael Pérez has come up in his place, and Gary Sanchez has a reported opt-out of his deal if he remains in the minor leagues on May 19. A lot of movement with Mets catchers could be on the horizon.

The Mets did not have an update on Tomas Nido, who has been on the injured list since May 10 with a case of the aforementioned dry eye syndrome. There has been no offered timeline on his return.
