With the Major League Baseball regular season drawing to a close Sunday, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso won the home run title with 53 long balls.

It is the first time a Met has the led the majors in home runs for a season, and it is the first time in MLB history that a rookie led all of baseball with home runs.

Alonso, 24, shattered the rookie record for home runs on Saturday with his 53rd long ball. Though he didn’t homer on Sunday for the Mets season finale, no one in baseball surpassed his home run total.

For the rookie Alonso, it just adds on to what is sure to be a Rookie of the Year season.

His latest feat builds upon a Home Run Derby championship, an All-Star Game appearance, breaking the NL rookie record, the Mets single season home run record and many other accomplishments both on and off the field.

Alonso was removed from Sunday’s game in the 11th inning in favor of Dominic Smith to a standing ovation.
