Mets slugger Pete Alonso has said that he’s thankful to be alive after being involved in a horrifying car crash on Sunday.

With yesterday being the mandatory report day for all players at Spring Training, Alonso was driving in Tampa when he was involved in a scary incident with his car flipping over after a man ran a red light.

Speaking to media members at the Mets facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla. earlier today, the current Home Run Derby champion revealed that he had to kick out the windshield in order to escape from his vehicle, while his wife was in the car behind him.

“Yesterday was a really close experience to death,” Alonso said. “My car flipped over probably about three times. I’m really thankful to be alive.

“I’m really thankful that I’m healthy. I’m very thankful to be here, I’m just super, super blessed to he here.

“Also, thank you Ford, for having great engineering.”

Alonso stressed that those in the car with him, as well as his wife and other family members in the car behind, were all healthy and doing okay.

Amazingly, despite the ordeal, the 27-year-old was able to report to camp on Monday and he is expected to participate in a full workout on Tuesday.

Alonso will now hope to put the incident behind him as he plans to build off a 2021 season in which he led the Mets in hits (147), home runs (37), RBIs (94), batting average (.262) and on-base percentage (.344).
