Following Monday night’s walk-off win, the New York Mets looked to continue their winning ways in a heated playoff push. They are in dire need of offensive production while Francisco Lindor continues to manage his back injury, and Pete Alonso provided the spark in the Mets’ blowout victory on Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old slugger knocked in five runs and blew the doors open in the sixth inning thanks to a three-run home run, his 33rd of the season. He also set a career-high with his 31st double of the season. Alonso is now on a five-game hit streak with three multi-hit games in that span and continues to put together an impressive September. He is now slashing .269/.371/.481/.852 in the month of September and has quickly shown his leadership abilities with Lindor missing time.

“I wanted to say some things from the heart because this place is very special. It’s a great fan base here and a great city. I am really fired up about the position we put ourselves in and a lot of people didn’t see us in this position four or five months ago. For us to be in this position it is a huge testament to the players that are here and the coaching staff. We have had that inner self-belief,” said Alonso when asked about speaking up at a team meeting in light of Lindor’s injury.

With Lindor’s return uncertain, it is going to take a group effort from the Mets to keep the good vibes rolling the rest of the season. Given that he has been the hottest hitter on the team for most of the season, guys like Alonso are going to have to step up not just on the field but also in the clubhouse.

“It does not come down to one individual, this is a group effort. All of us have risen to the occasion, and I think we have been playing great baseball. Obviously, we miss him because he is an unbelievable player on both sides of the ball. It is a task that we have to deal with, and we hope he has a quick and speedy recovery. In the meantime, the boys will hold it down”, Alonso said.
