The New York Mets announced that right-handers Paul Sewald and Chris Flexen were optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas after the conclusion of today’s loss to the Colorado Rockies. Two corresponding moves will be forthcoming tomorrow.
Sewald, 28, failed to get an out today, allowing two baserunners and a run scored. For the year, he’s 0-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 26 appearances for the Mets. In 39.0 innings he’s walked 11 while striking out 38 batters.
Flexen, 23, faced one batter today and got DJ LeMahieu to fly out to Brandon Nimmo. It was just his second appearance of the season. He owns a 5.43 ERA in 11 starts and one relief appearance for Triple-A Las Vegas.
I’m just speculating here, but this could lead to an opportunity for Drew Smith who would need to be added to the 40 man roster. But the Mets could easily move AJ Ramos to the 60 day disabled list to make room for him.
Smith, 24, has a very respectable 3.00 ERA for Las Vegas this season, striking out 28 and walking 12 in 30.0 innings pitched. He’s allowed only five home runs in 174 career innings.
