This special award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team. It is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder whose spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972. The winner will be announced during the World Series.
Paul Lo Duca is an active supporter and fund raiser for several children’s charities as well as the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
"There’s a ton of people in this game that do a lot of great things, and that’s not even saying the guys in this clubhouse," Lo Duca said. "It is an honor and something that I want to keep doing for the rest of my life."
