Last week it was “Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!” as Dr. Peter Venkman would say.

Now it’s “well well Sandy still hasn’t made his offer”

Yeah and neither have the other teams who are interested.

The biggest reason I’m not all over Alderson for not “making an offer,” is because I feel he’s testing the market. Just like the Cardinals are testing the Pujols market by not up’ing their offer. Right now, as far as “we” know, the market for Jose Reyes is NOT in Reyes’ favor.

You can knock Alderson all you wish, but his job is to do what is best for the Mets, not Jose Reyes. If right now, the only team hot and heavy for Reyes is the Marlins as reports suggest, then that is good news for the Mets front office and their fans. However, it’s still early. I have no doubt the market will grow, but on this day, the market is favoring Sandy Alderson.

You know why the Marlins did what they did?

They are trying to sell season tickets, and create buzz around their new park/logo etc. They may sign some of these guys who knows… but it’s no mistake that the SAME WEEK they unveiled their new marketing plan just HAPPENED to be the same week they made it public they were having discussions with Reyes, Pujols, etc.

You know what everybody was talking about in baseball last week? The Miami Marlins. Mission accomplished.

It’s still very early in the process and frankly if Reyes HAD left that meeting and signed with the Marlins, his agent should be fired.

Everybody needs to relax a bit and understand it’s not even Thanksgiving. This could be Reyes’ only real chance to be wined and dined by MLB clubs across the country and talk “turkey.” He’s not going to jump and take the very 1st offer he gets.

It’s still very possible that Reyes would sign with the Marlins at some point, but I highly doubt it would happen without some sort of discussion with serious players in the free agent market. The Detroit Tigers could sneeze out a better offer than the “reported” Marlins offer, you think Peter Greenberg is going to let Reyes sign without talking to teams like Detroit, Washington, Milwaukee, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and oh yea the New York Mets and maybe even the Yankees?

I’m not saying all of those teams would make him an offer, but I’d bet the majority of them would have a discussion with Reyes about it.

I love the Hot Stove season, but I also can’t stand it at the same time. It’s a season full of assumptions, and rumors to fill column space.

For Reyes, I may be in the minority but I’ve waited this long, I can patiently await a credible news source telling me where and when he’s signing before I worry about why the Mets didn’t sign him.
