One of the more interesting rumors this offseason has been that the San Diego Padres were expected to make a serious run at free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Those rumors got very real on Thursday when the Padres met with Hosmer according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. It was reported earlier this week by Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports that current Padres first baseman Wil Myers would have no issue moving back to the outfield to accommodate Hosmer.
Hosmer, 28, had a career-season in 2017 when he hit .318/.385/.498 with 31 doubles, 25 doubles and 94 RBI for the Kansas City Royals. He also posted a career-high 132 OPS+ and played in all 162 games. He’s a career .284/.342/.439 hitter in seven major league seasons.
The left-handed hitting Hosmer also won his his fourth gold glove despite being a poor defender at first with -7 DRS.
Earlier this offseason, MLB Trade Rumors predicted Hosmer would sign a deal worth six years, $132 million.
