The Mets were on a quest to return to the World Series for the first time since 2000 when they headed to Wrigley Field on October 21, 2015.

Lucas Duda hit a three-run homer and Travis d’Arnaud hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Mets all the offense they would need to finish off the sweep of the Cubs.

Duda doubled in two more runs in second inning, to give the Mets an overwhelming 6-0 lead.

The icing on the cake came in the eighth inning when Daniel Murphy hit a historic two-run homer. Murphy homered for the sixth straight game, a new postseason record.

Steven Matz allowed only one run in 4 2/3 innings before turning it over to 1 1/3 scoreless innings by Bartolo Colon.

Jeurys Familia stretched his postseason scoreless streak to 8 2/3 innings with a quiet ninth inning that closed the book on an amazin’ sweep.

The Mets won Game 4 over the Cubs 8-3, giving fans what they had been waiting over a decade for, a chance at the World Series.

Murphy, the NLCS MVP, went an incredible 9-for-17 with four home runs and six RBI in the four-game sweep. Duda went 4-for-10 while knocking in six runs and d’Arnaud hit two solo homers.

Mets captain David Wright also had himself a fine series, he went 4-for-14 with two doubles, four walks, and five runs scored.

“People kind of giggled at us and laughed at us when we proclaimed we were going to be a playoff team,” Wright said after the big win,

The Mets starting pitching in the series from Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, and Matz was superb as they combined for a 2.16 ERA over 25 innings.
