Eleven years ago today at Citi Field, New York Mets third baseman David Wright became the fastest player in franchise history to reach the 1,000 career hit plateau.

Already on-base twice in the nightcap of the doubleheader with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wright stepped into the box against right-hander Ramon Troncoso.

With runners on the corners and two outs in a 3-3 ballgame, the dialed-in Wright jumped on a first pitch 90 MPH offering from Troncoso and muscled it into right-center field, scoring Angel Pagan from third to give the Mets a 4-3 lead, and ultimately accomplish the feat.

Two innings later with the bases loaded the slugger picked up hit #1,001, as he cleared the bases with a triple to deep right-center field, helping the Mets secure a 10-5 win and their first doubleheader sweep of the Dodgers since August of 1971.

Wright had himself a big day at the plate, as he went a combined 4-for-6 with two walks, four runs batted in, and a pair of runs scored in the two games.

At the time Wright joined Ed Kranepool, Cleon Jones, Edgardo Alfonzo, Mookie Wilson, Bud Harrelson, Mike Piazza, and Darryl Strawberry as the only players in franchise history with 1K career hits. Jose Reyes also went on to join this list later on during the 2010 season.

Wright reached the mark in his 868th career game, 67 games before Mike Piazza, who was the previous quickest in team history at 935 games. Darryl Strawberry was the previous youngest, doing so at 28 years old, one year older than Wright, who was 27 at the time.

Wright made the All-Star team and finished 24th in National League MVP voting after hitting 36 doubles and 29 homers while driving in 103 runs and posting a .856 OPS during the 2010 season.

Through the ups and the downs Wright stuck with the Mets and Mets fans. The Virginia native went on to be named the fourth Captain in New York Mets history, and donned the orange and blue for fourteen seasons.

Wright was a seven-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner and a two-time Silver Slugger recipient. He holds the franchise record for hits (1,777), RBI (970), runs scored (949), doubles (390), total bases (2,945), extra-base hits (658), walks (761), and go-ahead homers (87).
