Corey Oswalt made his final start of his rookie campaign on Friday night against the Marlins.

He turned in a solid performance, going four innings, allowing four hits, three walks, one run and one earned.

Oswalt didn’t allow a run until the fourth when Magneuris Sierra scored Peter O’Brien on a ground out that kept the bases loaded. The righty escaped the jam relatively unscathed, only the one run, and his night ended shortly there after.

He didn’t have a clean inning through the night, but he showed ability to buckle down and deliver a gutsy outing, even when he doesn’t have his best command and movement on pitches.

The righty has had an interesting rookie season, in which hes started and performed well, been sent to the bullpen in favor of Jason Vargas, where he struggled, and is now filling in for Zack Wheeler who was shut down last week due to his reaching a new career high in innings pitched.

The rookie  has a season ERA of 5.85, but his ERA as a starter is more than a full run better than it is for the season. Oswalt’s 12.54 ERA as a reliever is very showing of the Mets messing with the youngsters promise as a starter, but that’s a story for another time.

If the roster holds for the Mets, Oswalt will likely be in the hunt for the fifth starter job when camp opens up in Port St. Lucie, Florida next February.

Oswalt finishes the 2018 season at 3-3 with a 5.85 ERA over a span of 64.2 innings pitched.
