Buster Olney of ESPN reported that the Mets checked in on free agent first baseman Freddie Freeman before the lockout.

Olney also noted, “There is a perception in the industry that Freddie Freeman is not going back to the Braves.”

Buster reported that the Blue Jays were a team to watch as well, and that he didn’t think Freeman would end up with the Yankees.

The Mets would certainly like to add another bat once the lockout ends, and Freeman is one of the best on the market.

Getting the former Brave would give the Mets a big-time two-headed monster of Pete Alonso and Freeman to split first base and DH.

Freeman, 32, hit .300/.393/.503 with 31 home runs, 83 RBIs, and a 4.7 rWAR in 159 games with the Braves.

The left-handed hitter has finished in the top 10 of NL MVP voting in four straight seasons including winning the award in the shortened 2020 season.

Signing Freeman would cost the Mets the 14th overall pick because he declined the qualifying offer from the Braves.
