After six seasons in Oakland and two All-Star appearances in 2015 and 2016, the Oakland Athletics have designated catcher Stephen Vogt for assignment.
Vogt, 32, was hitting just .217/.287/.357 on the year with four homers in 174 plate appearances. Vogt is just two years removed from a season in which he hit .261/.341/.443 with 18 homers, making his first All-Star team. He did it again last year, slashing .251/.305/.406 with 14 dingers.
There’s been talk for a while, with Travis d’Arnaud continually failing to live up to his enormous potential, about a Vogt trade to the Mets. Now would, of course, be the best opportunity yet to acquire him at a very low price.
In addition to time a catcher, Vogt has also played first base and right field.
Vogt is under contract this year for just under $3 million and has two more arbitration years left.
