The Mets (24-18) defeated the Milwaukee Brewers (18-25) by a score of 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field, and in the process, earned the series victory.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom toed the rubber for the Mets this afternoon, and gutted his way through five innings, in which he threw over 100 pitches and allowed four runs.

In the first inning, deGrom got into immediate trouble, allowing a double to Jonathan Villar to start the game, but was able to retire the next three batters in order.

The Mets got on the board in the bottom half of the first, but deGrom immediately gave the Brewers the lead in the second, walking Aaron Hill and then having Ramon Flores take him deep.

In the fourth inning, deGrom surrendered two more runs. Aaron Hill walked to lead off the inning, then advanced to third on a single from Alex Presley. Ramon Flores subsequently drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Zach Davies then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and Jacob deGrom threw a wild pitch to put a runner at third with two out, which was followed by a Jonathan Villar single to left to give Milwaukee a 4-1 lead.

DeGrom pitched a clean fifth to end his day, before handing the ball over to Hansel Robles who pitched two solid innings out of the ‘pen.

Addison Reed kept the Brewers at bay in the eighth, and closer Jeurys Familia got the ball for the ninth in a non-save situation.

Jonathan Villar doubled off Familia with one out, but a strong throw from Yoenis Cespedes and a diving stop from David Wright on the throw back to the infield prevented Villar from advancing.

Scooter Gennett hit one to Asdrubal Cabrera, who wisely threw to third and erased Villar from the equation. Familia then got Jonathan Lucroy to pop-out and end the inning.

Offense:

Curtis Granderson got the Mets on the scorecard first this afternoon, launching his eighth homer of the year in the bottom of the first.

After Milwaukee took a 4-1 lead, the Mets cut that lead in half in the fourth. Yoenis Cespedes singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Zach Davies.  Asdrubal Cabrera then singled to right to bring Cespedes around to score.

In the sixth inning, after Michael Conforto walked, Yoenis Cespedes knotted the game up on a two-run shot to left field, his 14th of the season.

With the game remaining tied into the ninth, the Mets were looking for their first walk-off win of the season.

Eric Campbell singled to lead off the frame, which was followed by a very solid at-bat from Kevin Plawecki, who eventually drew a walk.

Matt Reynolds failed twice to drop down a sacrifice bunt, but with two strikes, was able to and advanced the runners to second and third with one out.

Curtis Granderson was intentionally walked to load the bases for the captain, David Wright.

The erratic Michael Blazek threw three straight balls to Wright, who then laced the fourth pitch into the gap in right field to send the Brewers home with their tails between their legs.
