There’s been no progress regarding new extensions with David Wright and R.A. Dickey since they had their options picked up last week. Some reports said that negotiations were at a standstill last week, but today Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger reports that the Mets are not close to reaching new agreements with either Wright or Dickey, according to a one person with knowledge of the discussions.
This is starting to take on a very familiar feeling. I’m also starting to hate the phrase “top priority” and cringe whenever I hear someone in the front office use it.

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, the Mets plan to begin to intensify talks with their star third baseman David Wright this week.
Now that the Mets have exercised David Wright’s 2013 club option, the team and its signature player plan to intensify negotiations, discussing years and dollars as soon as this week, according to a person briefed on the process.
Mets officials are determined to conduct talks in private, and avoid leaks that could complicate efforts to retain their third baseman. But a well-placed source outside the front office expects discussions to accelerate immediately.
On the R.A. Dickey front, things do not seem to be going along as quickly, and as Martino puts it, there is a genuine chance that Dickey could be dealt if a resolution is not soon met.
Something I would be interested in seeing how backloaded Wright’s new deal would potentially be. Any deal agreed upon will supercede his option that was picked up earlier this week.
As for the option of dealing R.A. Dickey, it would be selling high, however they would need to get quite a return in order to avoid losing the fan base in my opinion.
