Mets.com is reporting that the Mets dodged a bullet and that Jose Ryes will not require a stint on the DL.

They write,

The New York Mets got a little good news today regarding shortstop Jose Reyes. Or at least it wasn’t the bad news they may have been expecting.

Reyes underwent an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan after aggravating a right calf injury that had been bothering him for more than a week.

The MRI showed that Reyes has tendinitis behind his right calf and he is officially listed as day-to-day. At this point, he has not been placed on the DL.

The question on everyone’s mind though is, are the Mets making the right move by not placing him on the DL and giving him enough time to heal properly?

These calf strains can have a way of reoccurring if not given the opportunity to heal fully, as evidenced by what took place on Wednesday when Reyes started the game and was forced to leave in the third inning after re-injuring the calf while running out a grounder.

We’ve seen the Mets botch these things up before.

So, am I relieved that Jose Reyes is avoiding the DL?

Yes.

Am I still concerned that it could still be more serious than the Mets think?

Again, the answer is yes.

Should the Mets have placed him on the DL anyway and not take any chances?

The smart money says yes.
