New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo is the current unlikely leader of the National League in terms of isolated slugging (.293) and ranks third behind Nolan Arenado and Freddie Freeman with his .574 slugging percentage.

Yup, you read that right, Nimmo has been one of the best sluggers in the NL to this point in the 2018 season.

His power outburst has him excited about possibly participating in the Home Run Derby next month as he told Tim Healey of Newsday, “I’m intrigued by it for sure. It would be a really cool experience. There will be other factors, how I’m feeling at that point. So much can happen in a month. I think it’s going to go more into how I’m feeling, but heck, it’s an honor to even be asked that question.”

It’s not that crazy when you realize that Nimmo is hitting a home run once every 15.67 at-bats, the fifth highest rate in the NL behind Christian Villanueva, Bryce Harper, Eugenio Suarez, Kyle Schwarber and Arenado.

The derby takes place at Nationals Park on July 16 with none of the participants known at this time.

Nimmo isn’t on the All-Star ballot itself, but can receive your support as a write-in candidate. He is currently second among NL outfielders with his 2.7 fWAR.
