Lynn Worthy of the Press & Sun-Bulletin spoke with Dicky Scott, the Mets Director of Player Development, about top outfield prospect Brandon Nimmo and the possibility that he may be nearing a promotion to Double A Binghamton.
“He’s tearing it up down there right now.” Scott continues, “It’s the perfect scenario where you have guys forcing your hand. It almost leaves us no other response than to promote him.”
Nimmo entered Thursday ranked among the Florida State League leaders in several categories which include, first in walks (45) and runs scored (49), second in on-base percentage (.464), third in batting average (.339), and fifth in hits (65),
“That’s what you want from your players. You want them to push and play well as opposed to playing an entire year and saying, ‘Well let’s send him to the next level just because, kind of a right of passage.’ That’s just not how it works,” says Scott.
New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco recently spoke with the Wall Street Journal last week and said that the front office expects Nimmo to play a full season at every level, including staying at St. Lucie for the duration of the 2014 season.
But Scott tells the Press & Sun-Bulletin that the plan is not set in stone.
“He’s been getting on base. He’s hitting. He’s walking. He’s gotten a lot stronger this year too,” says Scott. “He’s just really coming into his own. This would be a good step for him. I would expect to see him up here [Binghamton] at some point this year.”
The B-Mets outfield is already packed with Darrell Ceciliani, Cory Vaughn, Travis Taijeron, Kyle Johnson and at times Dustin Lawley; so fitting Nimmo into the mix will be extremely difficult, but if he continues to dominate the Florida State League, the organization will have no choice but to reward him with a promotion, and allow Pedro Lopez to figure out the rest.

Brandon Nimmo returned to the St. Lucie Line-up after he was pulled from the game on Tuesday when he suffered what the Mets labeled a sprained left ankle.
In the St. Lucie 3-2 victory, he finished 1 for 4, with a run scored and his ninth stolen base on the season.
Nimmo suffered what the Mets labeled a sprained left ankle in St. Lucie’s loss to Brevard County on Tuesday.
The center fielder hustled to cut off a double in right-center and came up hobbling. After getting the throw back into the infield, he continued to jump on one leg to the warning track. He was removed from the game, but managed to walk off the field under his own power.
It looks like the Mets dodged a bullet and Nimmo is fine.
