jon niese

Look at all those zeroes… Lefthander Jon Niese went all the way on a three-hit shutout as the Mets beat the Phillies 5-0 tonight at Citi Field.

Niese was absolutely brilliant in what was his best start of the season and limited the Phillies to just four baserunners in the game. It was his second career shutout and he had the Phillies dumbfounded all night long with a great assortment of fastballs, curves and changeups.

Niese induced a lot of groundballs in the game and struck out five, but what I loved most was the quick rhythm and pace he set – he was in complete control. What a shot in the arm for the team…

The Mets got on the board in the third on an RBI single by Daniel Murphy, but the biggest hit in the game  was a bases loaded double by Niese in the sixth, who helped his own cause and drove in three runs.

It was feel-good win and snapped the Mets five game losing streak.

The Mets will have Daisuke Matsuzaka making his second start for them tomorrow night as he opposes left-hander Cole Hamels at 7:10 PM.

Lets Go Mets!
